The EDF group, through the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind consortium (Atlantic Shores) owned equally between its subsidiary EDF Renewables and Shell New Energies US LLC., announces having won a 1.5 GW offshore wind farm project from the state of New Jersey in the United States. The consortium was named the winner by the New Jersey Department of Community Services.
The location of the future park is located at a distance of 15 to 30 km from the coast. One of the most powerful in the United States, this offshore wind farm will supply electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 700,000 homes. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024.
Atlantic Shores will partner with a wind turbine manufacturer who will build a nacelle assembly factory, which should lead to the creation of thousands of long-term jobs. The project also plans to invest in New Jersey's leading higher education institutions to train students for new careers in the offshore wind industry.
A major player in offshore wind power, the EDF group has a portfolio of 6.5 GW of projects in operation, under construction or in development around the world, including 2 GW in France where it is the leader. It also operates in the sector in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, China, and now in the United States, a country in which its subsidiary EDF Renewables has been established for more than 20 years. It holds 6 GW of assets there, mainly onshore wind and solar, in operation and under construction.
Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman and CEO of the EDF Group, declared: “We are very proud to have won this major 1.5 GW project in the state of New Jersey, the first offshore wind project for EDF in the UNITED STATES. This success reinforces the quality and competitiveness of our offer and I would like to salute the work carried out over several months by our teams, in partnership with Shell New Energies. This project constitutes a significant step forward in the Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its installed renewable capacities worldwide between 2015 and 2030 to bring them to 60 GW net. »
