Leading electrician in terms of installed renewable power in France and the European Union, the EDF group confirms its acceleration in the renewable energy sector in France, with growth in the gross installed capacities of its subsidiary EDF Renouvelables of more than 70 % over the over the last five years, i.e. an average rate of +12%/year. Several significant advances particularly mark the year 2019.
Success of the preparatory phase of the Solar Plan
The Solar Plan aims to make the Group, once again, the solar leader in France with a target of 30 % market share by 2035. Two years after its announcement, the preparatory phase is ending, with first results concrete:
- Concerning ground-mounted solar power plants, the Group has multiplied by 7 in two years the land area secured, to reach 2,000 hectares. Over the same period, the volume of projects with a building permit was multiplied by 5, and the number of projects winning calls for tenders organized by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) by 6.
- Rooftop solar installations supported by the subsidiary EDF ENR, are also experiencing strong development. With 20 % market shares, the Group is today the leader in France in solar self-consumption with more than 10,000 installations on the residential market and around a hundred among industrial and tertiary customers.
The preparatory phase of the Solar Plan was therefore successfully completed. It is now entering its operational deployment phase. The total duration of development of a solar project, from the identification of a site to the commissioning of the installation, is currently in France of the order of 4 to 5 years.
Strengthening onshore wind power
2019 is a record year for onshore wind power for the EDF group in France with the commissioning of nearly 200 MW of capacity and the start of construction of an equivalent volume. EDF Renewables, for example, has just carried out the renewal (“repowering”) of its Petit-Canal wind farm (Guadeloupe). This wind turbine replacement operation made it possible to double the installed capacity of the park, which now stands at 12 MW, while halving the number of wind turbines (14 wind turbines compared to 32 previously).
Realization of offshore wind projects
The EDF group announced, a few weeks ago, the launch of the construction of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm with its Canadian partner Enbridge. With an installed capacity of 480 MW, this park will be the first to be established off the French coast, with commissioning planned for 2022. It is planned to launch construction of the Fécamp and Courseulles-sur-Mer projects. during 2020. Finally, the consortium led by EDF Renewables was declared this summer the winner of the 3rd call for tenders launched by the Government for the Dunkirk project (around 600 MW).
Thanks to these successes, EDF Renewables has just crossed the symbolic threshold of 2,000 MW of gross wind and photovoltaic capacity installed in France. This acceleration in renewable energies is part of EDF's CAP 2030 strategy, the objective of which is to double the Group's global renewable capacities to bring them to 50 GW net in 2030, largely through organic growth. It also demonstrates the Group's commitment to contributing to the ambitious objectives set by the Government in terms of renewable energies within the framework of the energy-climate law and the Multi-year Energy Program, to increase the share of electricity renewable (hydroelectricity, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal) to 40% of French electricity production in 2030.
Bruno Bensasson, EDF Group Executive Director in charge of the Renewable Energy Sector and Chairman and CEO of EDF Renewables, declared: “The growth of our activities in France is strong, thanks to the commitment of our teams to the territories. The year 2019 is generally marked, for EDF Renewables, by an acceleration in the world and a double rebalancing of our activities in terms of technologies – towards more solar and offshore wind – and in terms of our geographies, towards more Europe and emerging countries. These successes contribute to the implementation of EDF's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to make our Group a world leader in carbon-neutral electricity, relying on both nuclear and renewable energies, in particularly hydraulic, wind and solar power. »
