EDF Renewables commissions a 344 MW wind farm in Brazil
Paris, May 5, 2021 – The Folha Larga Norte wind complex, the third renewable installation built by EDF Renewables in Brazil, is now in operation.
This new wind farm with an installed capacity of 344 MW marks further progress in the implementation of the EDF group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its renewable capacities worldwide, from 28 GW to 60 GW net, between 2015 and 2030.
The Folha Larga wind farm is located in Campo Formoso, in the state of Bahia, one of the windiest in Brazil. Its 82 wind turbines produce electricity covering the equivalent of the annual energy needs of 850,000 Brazilian homes.
In total, 800 people were mobilized for the construction of this park. To meet its commitment to the local population, EDF Renewables had launched a plan aimed at training and recruiting staff from the Campo Formoso region. Thus, 67 % of the site workforce were local employees.
EDF Renewables undertook the construction of Folha Larga after winning long-term energy supply contracts during two Brazilian federal auctions launched in 2018. EDF Renewables also signed electricity sales contracts with companies (Corporate PPA), such as the one concluded over a period of 20 years with Braskem, one of the petrochemical giants on the American continent.
Established in Brazil since 2015, EDF Renewables holds a portfolio of 1,300 MW of wind and solar projects, consolidating its position as leader in the sector. This portfolio includes more than 900 MW of wind capacity in service or under construction in the states of Bahia and Paraíba, as well as a 400 MW solar power plant, located in the state of Minas Gerais.
Through these projects, EDF Renewables supports Brazil in respecting its commitments made within the framework of the 2015 Paris Agreement and aimed at reducing the country's carbon emissions by 37 % by 2025 and by 43 %, by 2030; renewable energies being particularly present and competitive in the country's electricity mix.
Frédéric Belloy, International Director of EDF Renewables, declared: “ We welcome the commissioning of this new large-scale wind project in Brazil. The remarkable commitment of our teams and subcontractors to implementing the strictest health and safety measures enabled the successful execution of the project during this extremely difficult pandemic period. Brazil is a leading country in the growth of renewable energy. EDF Renewables is strongly committed to continuing the development of competitive renewable energies in the country. As part of our collaboration with local authorities and with partner companies through Corporate PPA contracts, we are able to deploy our long-standing expertise to adapt our services to the needs of our clients.
