EDF Energies Nouvelles wins a new contract in Quebec for the construction and supply of electricity for a 224 MW wind farm

As part of Hydro-Québec Distribution's third call for tenders in 2013, EDF Energies Nouvelles won, via its local subsidiary EDF EN Canada, the Nicolas-Riou wind project (224.4 MW) in Quebec, for which a 25-year electricity sales contract was signed with the Canadian company.

The Nicolas-Riou wind farm project is located in the southeast of the province of Quebec, in the Regional County Municipalities (MRC) of Basque and Rimouski-Neigette. With an installed capacity of 224.4 MW, it will be made up of 68 Vestas wind turbines, with a unit power of 3.3 MW. Its construction should begin in spring 2016 and its commissioning is planned for the end of 2017.

The Nicolas-Riou wind project is owned at 50% by EDF EN Canada and at 33% by Énergie Éolienne Bas-St-Laurent, a company belonging to all of the Bas-Saint-Laurent MRCs, as well as the First Nation Maliseet of Viger. The remaining 17% shares depend on the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine inter-municipal energy board. The companies jointly signed an electricity supply contract (PPA: Power Purchase Agreement) with Hydro-Québec Distribution for a period of 25 years.

EDF Energies Nouvelles continues its collaboration with Hydro-Québec Distribution, after winning two calls for tenders in 2008 and 2010. Already the winner of a one gigawatt program now in the process of being implemented, EDF Energies Nouvelles is strengthening its positions in the Canadian market.
