EDF Energies Nouvelles commissions 350 MW of wind and solar capacity in Brazil

EDF Energies Nouvelles announces its first achievements of renewable installations in Brazil.

A major part of the Pirapora photovoltaic solar complex (with a total capacity of nearly 400 MWp), as well as a wind farm, Ventos da Bahia, with a capacity of 66 MW, have just been commissioned on the Brazilian network via its local subsidiary, EDF EN do Brasil. The 350 MW installed to date contribute to the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims in particular to double its renewable capacities by 2030 in France and internationally.

Pirapora, the most powerful solar power plant in Latin America

Located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, two of the three phases of the Pirapora photovoltaic solar project, with a cumulative capacity of 284 MWp, have entered into operation.

In total, the production of the most powerful solar complex in Latin America, of nearly 400 MWp, will supply electricity to 420,000 Brazilian homes each year.

The project benefits from 20-year electricity sales contracts (PPA), awarded in 2014 and 2015 as part of federal reserve auctions, with the CCEE (Chambre de Marketing de l'Energie Electrique) .

EDF Energies Nouvelles owns 80 % shares in the Pirapora solar complex, the remaining 20% are held by Canadian Solar Inc. (CSI), one of the leading solar players in the world which locally manufactures the complex's 1,235,070 solar panels.

The modules are installed on tracker structures with a horizontal axis, making it possible to optimize the efficiency of the installation.

Full commissioning of Pirapora is planned for the second half of 2018.

The EDF Group's first wind farm on the Brazilian market

The Ventos da Bahia wind farm, located in the state of the same name, has been commissioned.

This 66 MW wind farm is the first tranche of the complex of wind projects with a potential of 800 MW.

Made up of 22 turbines, the wind farm produces the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 160,000 Brazilian homes.

The electricity produced is sold under a 20-year PPA signed with ANEEL.

In a Brazilian government auction in 2015, EDF EN do Brasil won a second 20-year PPA for 117 MW of wind power.

Its commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2018.

8th energy consumer in the world, Brazil constitutes the most important market in Latin America in terms of the development of renewable energies. Nearly 75% of its national energy production is made up of green energy.

The ten-year energy plan drawn up by the Ministry of Energy, revised in 2015, provides for the doubling of the existing fleet. 73 GW mainly from renewable energies will have to be installed by 2024.

Antoine Cahuzac, Executive Director of EDF's Renewable Energy Sector and Chairman and CEO of EDF Energies Nouvelles, declared: “The success of these first achievements of renewable energy installations in Brazil marks an important milestone. It reinforces the strong development ambitions of the EDF Group in this country which aims to generate 23% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030 and our solar, wind and hydraulic projects currently under construction will contribute to this.
