San Diego, July 29, 2020 _ EDF Renewables in the United States announces the signing of a 22-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with N.V. Energy, Nevada’s electricity and natural gas provider. This contract concerns the electricity which will be produced by the Chuckwalla photovoltaic plant. The future 200 MW solar power plant coupled with a 180 MW battery storage system lasting 4 hours, will be developed, built and operated by EDF Renewables.
This major new project is part of the EDF group's CAP 2030 strategy to double its renewable capacities worldwide between 2015 and 2030, to bring them to 50 GW net.
Chuckwalla is located nearly 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas in Clark County, on the Moapa site of the Paiute Indian Reservation.
The project will mobilize around 300 people during its construction. When commissioned by the end of 2023, the solar plant will supply electricity to an average of 45,000 Nevada homes each year.
Chuckwalla's large-scale energy storage system will bring stability to the power grid, helping balance electricity production and demand. Thus, part of the electricity produced during sunshine hours can be delivered after sunset, during high energy demands.
In the United States, EDF Renewables operates a fleet of nearly 3.6 GW made up of wind, solar and storage energy installations.
Tristan Grimbert, Director North America said: “EDF Renewables offers the State of Nevada solutions to achieve its carbon emissions reduction objectives. The Chuckwalla power station's solar energy system with batteries provides security of supply during hours of high demand in the evening. This new project participates in EDF's Electric Storage Plan, the objective of which is to develop 10 GW of new means of electricity storage worldwide by 2035.
