EDF Renewables in North America and Shell Energy North America (US), LP (SENA) announce the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) relating to the energy production of a tranche of 132 MWp (100 MWac*) of the Palen photovoltaic project (500 MWac), called Maverick 4.
The new large-scale solar project contributes to EDF's CAP 2030 ambition, which aims to double its renewable capacities worldwide beyond 50 GW, between 2015 and 2030.
The Palen Solar Project is located in Riverside County, California, in the heart of the Mojave Desert.
Palen extends over more than 1,270 hectares of land in a zone dedicated to solar energy (SEZ: solar energy zone), belonging to the federal state.
Now having all the necessary authorizations for its construction, issued by the United States Federal Government (Bureau of Land Management), the future 500 MWac installation should be commissioned by the end of 2020.
The 132 MWp of energy generated by the Maverick 4 unit of the Palen Solar project will be purchased by Shell Energy North America under a 15-year PPA.
“SENA, one of the leading electricity suppliers in the West, is very actively expanding into renewable energy, building on our strengths and skills to offer more green electricity solutions to our customers” says Glenn Wright, vice president of Shell Energy Americas. “By working closely with companies like EDF Renouvelables, with proven skills in developing large-scale renewable energy production projects, we are both better able to meet the needs of our customers. constantly evolving.”
“EDF Renewables is pleased to have obtained the federal permit for the Palen solar project. This 500 MWp project gives EDF Renewables an unrivaled position to help energy suppliers like Shell meet their long-term obligations under California's Renewable Energy Promotion Policy (RPS – Renewable Portfolio Standard), by offering tranches at very competitive prices for the sector” says Ian Black, director of development for EDF Renewables in North America.
And he adds : “EDF Renewables is a leading partner in renewable energy, able to develop agreements based on the specific needs of customers such as Shell Energy North America. We look forward to cooperating with SENA, and are very pleased to announce the signing of this agreement as part of its RPS obligations. We hope that other contracts will follow to strengthen our relationship with Shell.”
EDF Renewables is among the main producers of renewable energy in North America with 10 GW of wind, solar and electricity storage projects carried out across the United States, Canada and Mexico and of which it now operates more of 6.5 GW.
*The contracts relate specifically to installed power expressed in MWac, a unit of measurement for alternating current.
