The EDF group commissions solar and wind installations in India

The EDF group, via its subsidiary EDF Energies Nouvelles, is continuing its development in renewable energies in India with the commissioning of three solar power plants. They complete the Group's Indian portfolio of renewable installations, which was enriched last April with five wind farms.

Continued development in solar

With a combined power of 87 MWp, the three new photovoltaic plants cover the annual energy needs of 120,000 Indian homes. They come in addition to the Group's operating solar capacities in India, which now stand at 207 MWp.

Two of the three plants are located in the state of Uttarakhand, in northern India. They have an installed capacity of 36 MWp each and belong to 49 % to EDEN, a subsidiary created in 2016 and owned equally by EDF Energies Nouvelles and EREN Renewable Energy. The remaining 51%s are owned by Omkar Powertech India Private Limited and local partners Profigate Infra Gasoline and Rays Power Infra, respectively.

The third plant, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, has a capacity of 15 MWp and is owned by EDEN.

The three photovoltaic installations benefit from a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the local network operators: Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) for the first two plants and Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) for the third.

The five wind farms are made up of 82 turbines and have a total installed capacity of 164 MW. Located in the state of Gujarat, one of the windiest regions in India, they generate the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of 460,000 Indian homes.

The parks were built by SITAC Wind Management and Development, a company specializing in wind power owned equally by EDF Energies Nouvelles and the SITAC group. Each park benefits from a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL), the regional distribution company.

EDF supports the energy transition in India

With these commissionings, the EDF group now operates nearly 371 MW of installed solar and wind capacity in India. The country represents strong development potential in both energies, with respective objectives of 100 GWp and 60 GW of installed capacity by 2022.

In the field of nuclear energy, EDF and the Indian national electrician Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) signed a cooperation protocol in January 2016 relating to the project to build 6 EPR reactors in Jaitapur, in the west from India. The Group is also engaged in the development of smart grids. In September 2016, EDF was selected as part of a partnership with the public company WAPCOS for the design of a 75,000 smart meter network for the municipality of New Delhi. Furthermore, the Group, via its subsidiary Citelum, ensures the maintenance and operation of public lighting in the municipalities of Indore and Ahmenabad.

Jean-Bernard Lévy, CEO of the EDF group, declared: “ We are proud to be a player in the Indian energy transition through a complete range of energy solutions. The recently commissioned solar and wind installations contribute to two major objectives of the Group's CAP 2030 strategy: reaching 50 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and developing our activities in high-growth markets such as India ".
