EDF Energy Renewables wins contract for 49 MW battery storage system at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, UK

As part of a call for tenders awarded by National Grid, the British electricity transmission network, EDF Energy Renewables wins a battery storage installation project (49 MW) on the site of the gas cycle power station combined from West Burton, in the county of Nottinghamshire. This installation will be part of a frequency regulation system, with a total capacity of 200 MW, which will be deployed throughout the country. The objective is to improve the stability of the national electricity network.

In a context marked by strong growth in the production of renewable energies and the closure of large electrical installations, battery storage technology contributes to smoothing the production of the national electricity network. The storage system can be activated on the electricity network to respond quickly to fluctuations. In the United Kingdom, storage is set to play a major role at the heart of a balanced energy mix, including renewables, nuclear and gas.

Matthieu Hue, Managing Director of EDF Energy Renewables, said: “We are delighted to have won this contract as part of the call for tenders launched by the National Grid. The rise of a diversified energy mix oriented towards decarbonization offers a bright future for battery storage technology. This success demonstrates the expertise of the EDF Group and its ability to deploy innovative and competitive solutions. »

The EDF Group invests in a wide range of low carbon technologies in Britain and around the world, including renewable energy and nuclear electricity.
In order to build this project, the Group has submitted a building permit application for storage units in West Burton, close to EDF Energy's West Burton coal-fired power stations (3,300 MW total power).
The EDF Group thus demonstrates its ability to combine its international skills to develop new technologies alongside more traditional energies.

EDF Energy Renewables is a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, owned equally with EDF Energy.
