EDF Energies Nouvelles announces the commissioning by its North American subsidiary EDF Renewable Energy of an innovative storage system, combining an energy storage battery and computerized control software.
The McHenry installation makes it possible to provide nearly 20 MW of power (40 MW of dynamic capacity) and to control an energy reserve to stabilize the frequency of the electrical network at the local level.
Installed in McHenry County in Northern Illinois, this McHenry energy storage system is notably composed of 11 1.8 MW containers, each equipped with lithium-ion batteries manufactured by the company BYD America, a world leader rechargeable batteries.
Connected to the local electricity network, the McHenry installation is controlled by high-performance energy management software developed by EDF Store & Forecast, a company created from EDF R&D teams. The latter makes it possible to contribute to the stability of the frequency of the local electrical network by precisely and quickly managing the charging or discharging of the battery to provide/absorb power in the event of a drop/increase in frequency, on instructions from the network operator.
The McHenry installation thus constitutes a dynamic reserve of power made available to the electricity network manager PJM (Pennsylvania – New Jersey – Maryland).
Battery energy storage and its intelligent management constitute a service which is part of the continuity of EDF Energies Nouvelles' business as an electricity producer.
It can be used in particular to locally smooth the intermittency of wind or solar photovoltaic production.
One year after the commissioning in Guyana of the Toucan solar power plant (5 MWp) with energy storage, the McHenry project is the second achievement of EDF Energies Nouvelles in the field of storage.
The group's subsidiary, EDF Renewable Energy, is currently developing 100 MW of additional storage projects in North America.
