Paris, December 16, 2021 – The tender for a renewable energy project in Iquitos, Peru, was won by EDF Renewables, which will ensure the development, construction and operation of approximately 100 MW of photovoltaic capacity, and more than 100 MWh of battery storage.
EDF Renewables' microgrid solution is suitable for isolated areas, such as islands. It will be implemented here to provide low-carbon electricity to the microgrid network of a remote town, located near the Amazon forest. This project contributes to Peru's ambition to reduce its consumption of fossil fuels.
EDF Renewables has signed a 20-year electricity sales contract with Electro Oriente, a Peruvian public electricity distribution company. This contract provides for the supply of low-carbon electricity by 2026, at a more competitive price than diesel.
The solar hybrid power plant, coupled with batteries, will be connected to a microgrid which currently provides electricity to the 550,000 inhabitants of the city of Iquitos.
The largest city in the world not connected to a national electricity grid, Iquitos currently uses diesel exclusively for its electricity production. Thanks to this innovative project combining photovoltaic energy and battery storage, EDF Renewables will replace 40 to 50 % of electricity produced from fossil fuels, thus avoiding the emission of 2 million tonnes of CO2.
Frederic Belloy, International Director of EDF Renewables, commented: " We are proud to strengthen our commitment to the energy transition in South America, by providing low carbon energy solutions in Peru. This innovative microgrid solution will allow the city of Iquitos to reduce its share of fossil fuels and protect itself against the volatility of oil prices. This hybrid project combining solar energy and battery storage is part of our CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double, between 2015 and 2030, our global renewable energy capacities, increasing them from 28 to 60 GW net.".
